    Participants will be introduced to system wide approaches and practices to promote appropriate student behavior, teach social competence and establish consistent reactions to instances of unacceptable student behavior. When all staff consistently use an effective school wide approach, overall student behavior improves, time available for teaching and learning increases and the climate of the school community becomes more supportive and safe for both students and educators.     Exemplary schools have well-designed, consistently implemented, and consistently improving systems for encouraging appropriate student behavior. However, even in these schools, there will be a small number of students needing more structure and support to be behaviorally successful. This workshop will address how to develop, implement, monitor, and adjust effective individual plans for these few "tough" kids for whom the school wide practices are not sufficient.     Each year the National Native American Parent Center presents an annual conference for Native American family members, tribal leaders, health professionals, mental health professionals, tribal, public school professionals, and others who are interested in ensuring the special education needs for Native American students who are ages 0 - 26.

    Workshops focus on strategies and methods to increase outcomes for Native American students with disabilities, and increase parent involvement in the special education process. We offer information on best practices working with Native American students with disabilities to produce successful educational outcomes. This conference will provide information on: successful strategies that promote collaborative relationships between tribes, schools, and families; successful methods in positive behavioral interventions, the latest research and data on effective classroom practices and strategies for Native American students.

    Conference Goals: Families will gain skills to increase their ability to advocate for their child in the special education process. Families will learn stress reduction techniques. Department of Education Issues Guidance on Rights of Students with Disabilities When Ed... - 0 views

  • What: Today, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) issued guidance through Dear Colleague Letters to elementary and secondary schools and institutions of higher education along with a Frequently Asked Questions document on the legal obligation to provide students with disabilities an equal opportunity to enjoy the benefits of technology. This guidance is a critical step in the Department’s ongoing efforts to ensure that students with disabilities receive equal access to the educational benefits and services provided by their schools, colleges and universities. All students, including those with disabilities, must have the tools needed to obtain a world-class education that prepares them for success in college and careers. Today’s guidance provides information to schools about their responsibilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The guidance supplements a June 2010 letter issued jointly by OCR and the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. The June letter explains that technological devices must be accessible to students with disabilities, including students who are blind or have low vision, unless the benefits of the technology are provided equally through other means. Today’s guidance highlights what educational institutions need to know and take into consideration in order to ensure that students with disabilities enjoy equal access when information and resources are provided through technology. “Technology can be a critical investment in enhancing educational opportunities for all students,” said Russlynn Ali, assistant secretary for civil rights. “The Department is firmly committed to ensuring that schools provide students with disabilities equal access to the benefits of technological advances.” Today’s guidance is part of a larger effort by the Department and Obama administration to better serve the needs of people with disabilities. Last month, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan joined Kareem Dale, associate director for the White House Office of Public Engagement and special assistant to the President for disability policy, for a conference call with stakeholders to talk about some of the Department’s efforts. During the call, Duncan discussed the Department’s commitment to maintaining accountability in No Child Left Behind for all subgroups, including students with disabilities, and highlighted the Department’s proposal to increase funding for students with disabilities in the fiscal year 2012 budget. Ali will also join Dale for a stakeholder conference call where she will discuss today’s guidance and address the Department’s work to ensure that all schools are fulfilling their responsibilities under the federal disability laws that OCR enforces.

N.J. District Cited for Segregating Students With Disabilities - On Special Education -... - 0 views

  • A federal investigation into whether East Orange, N.J., schools placed students with disabilities in segregated classrooms is now closed with a pledge from the district to change the way it decides where these students attend school. The U.S. Department of Education's office for civil rights said today that it found that during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years, more than 60 percent of students with disabilities in East Orange were in self-contained classrooms. Many of the students had been diagnosed as having learning disabilities. The agency found that the district didn't always consider whether these students could be successful in an integrated classroom with the right supports. The New Jersey Department of Education's goal is that about 44 percent of students with disabilities spend most of their school days with students who don't have disabilities.

  • Arne observed the faculty there is “absolutely committed to making sure that every student fulfills their academic and social potential.” When Alexa asked the students on the panel what makes special education students so successful at Wilde Lake, one student shared that the cultural stigma of being a special ed student had been eliminated and declared that it had been taken over by the notion that, “I am a student!” We know that Wilde Lake takes this belief very seriously, as more than 90 percent of their students spend more than 80 percent of the school day in a general education setting.

  • Today, the Obama Administration outlined how states can get relief from provisions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act – or No Child Left Behind (NCLB) – in exchange for serious state-led efforts to close achievement gaps, promote rigorous accountability, and ensure that all students are on track to graduate college- and career-ready. “To help states, districts and schools that are ready to move forward with education reform, our administration will provide flexibility from the law in exchange for a real commitment to undertake change. The purpose is not to give states and districts a reprieve from accountability, but rather to unleash energy to improve our schools at the local level,” President Obama said. What this means for you:   For Teachers: A collaborative learning culture where teachers can target instruction towards the needs of students and offer a well-rounded curriculum. Fair and responsible evaluations that are based on multiple measures including peer review, principal observation, and classroom work.  For Principals: Greater flexibility to tailor solutions to the unique educational challenges of their students and recognition for progress and performance.  For Parents: Accurate and descriptive information about their children’s progress and honest accountability that recognizes and rewards success – where schools fall short – targeted and focused strategies for the students most at risk.  For Students: A system that measures student growth and critical thinking to inspire better teaching and greater student engagement across a well-rounded curriculum.
